WebP is an image format made for websites. It packs a picture into a much smaller file than JPG or PNG at the same quality, so pages load faster. Online shops, news sites, social networks and WhatsApp Web all serve pictures as WebP now. When you right-click and save an image, or long-press it on your phone, you often get a file ending in .webp instead of .jpg.
The catch is that a lot of software still does not know what to do with it. Older photo viewers show an error. Some email systems refuse it. Windows may even label the file as a Chrome HTML Document, which makes people think their .webp is a web page rather than a picture. And almost no form, portal or office will accept a .webp upload.
