What is PDF redaction?
The plain meaning of redact is to remove or hide part of a document before you share it. So if you use a PDF editor to black out text, test the result. Try to select the words under the bar. If the cursor picks them up, the text is only covered, not gone.
How this tool removes what is under the box
When you click Redact and save, every page that carries a black box is turned into a flat picture of itself, with the boxes painted in. The old page, with its text layer and embedded images, is thrown away and the picture takes its place. There is nothing left under the bar to copy, search or uncover. The trade-off: redacted pages become images

A file with many redacted pages can also grow in size; you can compress the PDF afterwards.

What about redacting a PDF in Word?
Opening a PDF in Word converts it first, and the layout often shifts, so it is a clumsy way to redact a PDF. It only makes sense when the document started life as a Microsoft Word document. Then delete the private text in the original, and turn it into a fresh file with Word to PDF. For a PDF you received from someone else, black boxes are faster and safer.
Redact a PDF in white, or remove the text completely
A black bar says "something was here". Sometimes you would rather the space looked empty: a form template with the old applicant's details removed, or a price list with one column blanked out.
Redact PDF in white instead of black

The best way to redact a PDF: a short checklist

- Make each box a little larger than the text. A bar that ends exactly at the last letter can leave the tops of tall letters showing.
- Look for repeats. An account number in the header of page 1 is usually in the header of every page.
- Check the small places: footers, email signatures, stamps, QR codes, barcodes and handwritten notes in the margin.
- Cover the label too when the label gives the secret away. A black bar after the words Reason for dismissal still tells a story.
- Open the saved file and try to select the hidden words. You should not be able to.
- Share only the file ending in -redacted, and keep the original somewhere safe.
Redact PDF not working? Try these fixes
Most problems come from the file, not from the boxes.
- The PDF will not open. It probably has a password. First unlock the PDF with the password you know, then redact it. You can add a password again afterwards.
- The page asks you to drag a box first. Redact and save needs at least one black box somewhere in the file.
- You are used to a Redact command whose Apply button stays greyed out. In desktop PDF programs that usually means the redact feature belongs to a paid edition, or nothing has been marked yet. Here there is no apply step: draw at least one box and Redact and save becomes active.
- A box is in the wrong place. Choose Move, then drag it, pull its corner handle to resize it, or delete it.
- The phone browser reloads or freezes on a very long file. Each redacted page is redrawn in memory. Split the PDF and redact only the part that needs it.
Can PDF redaction be reversed?
It depends entirely on how the redaction was made. A black rectangle drawn in a normal editor can be reversed in seconds: select the shape and delete it, or copy the text from under it. A redaction that flattens the page, as this tool does, cannot be reversed, because the text and the original image data are no longer in the file. Nothing in the redacted copy remembers what was there.
Two things can still give a secret away, and neither is a flaw in the black box. One is the file name and document properties: a file called offer-letter-priya-sharma.pdf tells a story even with every name blacked out, so rename it. The other is your original, which is untouched on your device. Keep it somewhere private and share only the -redacted copy.
How to check your redaction before you send it
- Open the saved file and try to select the text under each bar. Nothing should highlight.
- Press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F and search for the hidden name or number. It should not be found.
- Zoom in on the edges of each box to make sure no half letters peek out.
- If the file will be printed, print one page and check that the bars are solid black.
