Split PDF online, free and without signing in
You have a 60-page PDF and the form wants only page 4. Or a scanned bundle holds five different documents that belong in five different folders. This tool lets you split PDF online free: choose a mode, click once, and download exactly the pages you need. You can separate PDF pages free as often as you like – split PDF free, no limit on files or on days – with no watermark on the result.
You can split PDF without signing in or giving an email address. The work is done by your own browser, so the document is never sent to a server. That matters when the file is a bank statement, a medical report or a contract.
What is Split PDF?
What is split PDF? It is the opposite of merging. You take one PDF and cut it into smaller PDFs, or copy a few pages out into a new file. The original stays as it was; you simply get new documents made from its pages. A tool that does this is often called a PDF splitter online.
Extract pages from PDF: meaning and uses
The meaning of extract pages from PDF is simple: you pick certain pages and save only those as a new document. Typical uses:
- Send one month's page from a yearly bank statement instead of the whole thing.
- Pull your own mark sheet out of a combined results PDF.
- Share one chapter of lecture notes with a classmate.
- Keep only the signed pages of a long agreement for your records.
- Remove a cover letter from a scanned bundle before forwarding the rest.
Three ways to split a PDF file
The How to split menu has three modes. Each one answers a different need, so it helps to know which to pick before you split a PDF file.
Extract pages from PDF online
Choose Extract the pages I choose and type what you want in the Pages to extract box. Use a dash for a range and commas between items: 1-3, 5, 8-10 means pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10. By default these land together in one new PDF. This is the quickest way to extract pages from PDF online when you need a handful of pages from a long report. You can extract pages from PDF free, as many times as you need.
Separate PDF pages into separate files
Choose Every page as its own PDF to separate PDF pages into individual files – a 12-page document becomes 12 one-page PDFs inside a ZIP. It is the right mode when each page is its own item: certificates, payslips, scanned receipts, one-page invoices.
Want groups instead of single pages? Stay in the first mode, type your ranges and tick Save each range as a separate PDF. Typing 1-4, 5-9, 10-12 gives three files. That is how you separate PDF pages into different files of any length you like.
Split PDF into 2, in half or into equal parts
Choose Cut every N pages and set Pages per file. A 100-page scan with 10 pages per file becomes ten PDFs. To split PDF in half, enter half the page count – 25 for a 50-page file – and you get two PDFs. If the pages do not divide evenly, the last file simply holds the leftover pages. To split PDF into two PDFs of uneven length, use ranges such as 1-18, 19-50 with the separate-files box ticked. Any split PDF range you can describe with numbers, dashes and commas works.
Split PDF without losing quality
Splitting does not redraw or re-compress anything. Pages are copied into the new files exactly as they are, so you split PDF without losing quality: text stays sharp and selectable, images keep their resolution, and page sizes stay the same. Each output is usually much smaller than the original, simply because it holds fewer pages.
Can you split PDF by size?
Not directly. There is no option to split PDF by size, such as 5 MB per part, because page sizes in bytes vary too much to promise that. The practical route: use Cut every N pages, check the sizes of the parts, and lower the page count if one is too heavy. If a single part is still too large for a portal or email, run it through compress PDF to a smaller size.
Split PDF without losing a digital signature
This is not possible in any tool. A digital signature seals the whole file exactly as it was signed. Taking pages out creates a new file, and the seal does not carry over, so you cannot split PDF without losing the digital signature. The pages will still show the visible signature mark, but a PDF reader will not verify it. Keep the signed original, and share that when proof is needed.
Split PDF to JPG, images or Word
This splitter always produces PDF files. If you searched for a split PDF converter that outputs another format, a sister tool does the job in one step.
To split PDF to JPG, open PDF to JPG converter. It saves every page as its own picture, in JPG, PNG or WebP, at up to 300 dpi, and packs them in a ZIP. That is the way to split PDF into images for WhatsApp, a slideshow or a website, and to separate PDF pages to JPG without first cutting the PDF. For lossless images use PDF to PNG instead.
Only want a few pages as pictures? To extract pages from PDF to JPG, pull those pages out here first, then convert the small file. You get three images instead of three hundred.
To split PDF to Word, extract the pages you want to rewrite, then send that file to PDF to Word converter. Ten pages convert faster than two hundred.
Split PDF vertically: cutting a page in half
Two different things get called splitting. This tool splits by page: it decides which pages go in which file. Some people want to split PDF vertically instead – cut every page down the middle, so a scanned two-page book spread becomes two single pages, or a wide landscape sheet becomes two portrait halves. That is a different job, and it is worth being clear about what is possible here.
Split PDF vertically online with the crop tool
There is no one-click vertical mode in the splitter, but you can split PDF vertically online in three short steps using a sister tool. Open the file in crop PDF, drag the box around the left half, apply it to every page and save; then do the same for the right half. You now have two PDFs, one of left halves and one of right halves. Join them with the merger and reorder the pages in the organize tool so left and right alternate. The crop only hides the other half, so nothing is lost if you need to go back.
Split PDF by pages instead
If your scan already has one page per PDF page and you just want the chapters apart, you do not need any of that. Split PDF by pages with ranges – 1-12 for chapter one, 13-30 for chapter two – and tick the separate-files box. That is the normal case, and it takes seconds.
Works on any device – no software, no size limit
You can split PDF without software. There is no split PDF app to install and no split PDF free download to hunt for; the page runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android and iPhone. It is also a quick split PDF tool: there is no upload, so the wait is the few seconds your device needs to copy the pages.
On a phone the steps are the same as on a computer. Open the page in your mobile browser, pick the file from Downloads or your Files app, type the pages and tap the button. The small result is easy to attach to an email or share on WhatsApp, which helps when a form is due and you are away from your desk.
Split PDF without a size limit, even a large file
Upload-based services cap your file at some number of megabytes. Here nothing is uploaded, so no server sets a size limit, and nobody counts how many files you split in a day. You can split PDF large file scans of several hundred megabytes on a laptop. If an older phone stalls on a huge scan, try the same file on a computer, or extract a smaller range first.
Can I split PDF offline?
Almost. Once the page has loaded, the actual splitting happens on your device, exactly as it would in an installed program. So the thing people want from split PDF offline – that the document never goes to anyone's server – is already true here. You do need a connection to open the page, so load it before you go somewhere without signal. Free means free, or gratis if you prefer: no trial and no licence.
Best way to split PDF into multiple files: tips
The best way to split PDF into multiple files is to look at the document first and note where each part starts. Then one pass with ranges does the whole job. A few more things worth knowing:
- Page numbers mean the position in the file, not the number printed on the page. If a report has a cover and contents before its page 1, count those too.
- A password-protected PDF must be unlocked before it can be split. Remove the password with the unlock tool, using the password you know.
- Spaces in the ranges box do not matter: 1-3,5 and 1-3, 5 work the same.
- A scanned PDF splits just like any other, because each page is handled whole.
Rearranging instead of splitting
If your real goal is to delete a few pages or change their order inside the same document, organize PDF pages is quicker: you see thumbnails, remove or drag pages, and save one file. And when you have split too far, merge PDF files puts the parts back together in any order.
How to use the PDF splitter: common questions
Most questions about the splitter come down to which mode to pick and what to type. Here are the ones we hear most, answered in the order you meet them.
How can I extract pages from a PDF?
Select the file, choose Extract the pages I choose, and type the page numbers or ranges in the box. Click Split PDF and download the new file. That is how you extract pages from PDF free, on any device. If you want each range to become its own document, tick Save each range as a separate PDF before you click.
Split PDF editor, joiner or merge: which tool is next?
Splitting is often one step of a longer job, and this site keeps each step in its own tool. Looking for a split PDF editor to change the text on the pages you kept? Open the result in edit PDF. Want a split PDF joiner to put parts back in a new order, or to split PDF, merge it with another file, and send one document? Use merge PDF files. Each tool takes the last one's output, so you can chain them without any account.
